THE COMMUNITY ENGAGED AGAINST ANIMAL EXPLOITATION
While around the world, many countries prohibit “entertainment” shows with animals, France is lagging on this matter, especially in sight of its regulations regarding the exploitation of wild animal by circuses. Today, the captivity of animals to distract the public has become a societal issue at the heart of the debate.
SAUVAGES is a community of spirits and actions, a popular and united gathering against the abuses perpetrated towards nature and the animals. Real advocacy in favour of animals kept captive for the entertainment of humans, the community thus encourages circuses and others structures to begin an ethical transition and to set an example by renouncing any form of exploitation or exhibition of the wild or domestic animal, and developing new alternatives.
Why ?
As science offers new perspectives of understanding of the living world, mentalities change. The concerns are not only ecological anymore, but also ethical: is it fair to exploit animals for our pleasure? “Circuses, marine “entertainment” parks, corrida, greyhound racing, bear showers, elephant rides, cub-petting, hunting and many other “entertainments” embody the most absurd and cruel forms of animal exploitation of our time.
“Exhibiting a captive animal contradicts the notion of living being with a thought, a sensitivity, a freedom, a specificity. Captivity goes completely against the notion of respect for nature and respect for life in all its forms.” For all these reasons, SAUVAGES is positioning itself for a progressive prohibition of wild and domestic animals in circuses.
Many countries such as Bolivia, Peru, Greece, Cyprus, Paraguay, Comlombia, etc. have banned the use of wild animals in circuses !
The animals, broken in their body and spirit, develop aggressive behaviour or behaviour of stereotypy (swinging from right to left in elephants, repetitive movements in the cage for felines, etc.) witnesses of their psychological suffering. While around the world, entertainment parks with animals are more and more prohibited (Cyprus, Malta, Bolivia, Austria, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Salvador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Singapore, Israel, Mexico, Belgium, France is far behind in terms of animal welfare and its positioning against circuses using animals.
However, more and more French cities decide not to welcome circuses with animals anymore, amongst which Montreuil, Villeneuve-les-Avignon, Chartres, Bagnolet and recently Ajaccio.
SAUVAGES is a positive, participative, dynamic, and federating movement.
The event SAUVAGES took place in Bordeaux from June, 22 to 25, 2017. It marked the first of an itinerant speech on the matter. This roaming represents in particular a direct echo to the one imposed to animals in circuses, which undergo regular movements, in unsuitable conditions.
The foundation 30 Millions d’Amis, recognized as promoting the public interest, and HISA shared the same objective: to act together to stop the use of wild animals in entertainment structures, such as circuses or marine parks.
